Announcement for JUP Peace Volunteer – 2008, the third batch

JUP-Nepal is a National Dalit NGO for Human Rights, Socio-economic Development, and Environmental Protection with UN ECOSOC Consultative Status. Jana Uttahn Peace Volunteer Program has been started since 2005 as a campaign for peace building process. It contributes to promote peace through capacity building, campaigning, awareness raising, advocacy, lobbying towards caste and cultural tolerance. JUP seeks committed/well motivated and energetic Dalit youths for JUP Peace Volunteer program 2008.

Applicants will need to show: Intermediate level in any disciplines, an interest in human rights, commitment to work as volunteer and demonstrate their ability to contribute the areas of social inclusion, Dalit mainstreaming, caste/cultural tolerance. Other campus students (Dalit on Non- Dalits) who have been doing their research for the partial fulfillment of their specified subjects are also encouraged to apply. National Essay Competition

On the occasion Earth Day 2008, Environmental Camps of Conservation Awareness (ECCA- Nepal) is organizing National Essay Competition on the theme ‘How can School Environment play role in the campaign – Education for All’ with an objective to make the students aware on the issues related to school environment of Nepal and raise their perspective regarding their own school environment. All Nepali students studying in grade 6 to 10 are invited to submit essay for the competition under given guideline.

Guideline for Essay Competition

  • Participant in this competition can be individual or team (if work of a group).
  • The essay should be within 1000 to 1500 words.
  • Essays should be hand written or typed either in English or in Nepali language.
  • A cover page of the essay should contain title of the essay, student name(s), name of school/nature club, email or postal address and daytime contact phone number.
  • Participants must submit either their identity card of school/Nature club or verification letter from school/Nature Club with an essay for the competition.
  • Essay must be the work of the students and must be submitted in the authors’ own name(s) along with name of school/Nature club.
  • All received essays will be evaluated and best three essays will be awarded a certificate, trophy and cash prize as follows; Name of winners will be publish in daily newspaper.

1st position – Rs 7,000/-, 2nd position – Rs 5,000/- and 3rd position – Rs 3,000/-

Let’s Celebrate Earth Day 2008: An Open Invitation

Dear All,

This year Earth Day is expected to be the biggest yet! Hundreds of events are popping up all over the globe and April 22 should be a most memorable Earth Day.  The theme of Earth Day 2008 “A Call for Climate” wants to create a global awareness and demands for action against Climate Change. With the similar spirit we are also celebrating Earth Day 2008 on April 22 in Nepal to create mass awareness, pressurize government to shift towards more energy friendly technologies and develop adaptation mechanisms to tackle Climate Change.

“Earth Day is an annual event celebrated all over the world to broaden the base of support for environmental programs, to rekindle public commitment and build community activism around the world through a broad range of events and activities. Celebrated since 1970, Earth Day brings together people from various fora for a common cause: preserve ecology of Earth.”

Call for Proposal – NDM 2008

Nepal Development Marketplace (NDM) 2008 announces call for project proposals. The objective of Nepal Development Marketplace (NDM) 2008 is to harvest the most innovative ideas in development from around the country. The NDM also brings together a variety of actors in development to promote knowledge sharing and help form networks. The goal of NDM is to expose and engage the development community in productive and inventive partnerships that will try new approaches and offer high potential impact in poverty reduction and economic development.

Theme

To be eligible to compete, proposals must reflect the theme of “Securing Peace through Development” in any of the following areas:

· Health

· Education

· Water and Sanitation

· Agriculture, Irrigation and Food Security

· Infrastructure (Roads and Transportation)

· Energy

· Small Business and Micro Enterprise Support

· Information and Communication Technologies

· Employment Creation

The maximum award size will be 1.5 million Rupees. Awards to winners will vary in size according to the needs outlined in their proposals. Around 25 winner proposal will be awarded.

All proposals must meet the eligibility criteria and be received by April 17, 2008, after which a review process will select approximately 50 finalists who will be requested to submit detailed proposals from May 05 – 30, 2008. These proposals should describe a more comprehensive business and implementation plan with detailed budget. Finalists will be invited to participate at the national competition to be held in Kathmandu on June 15, 2008.

Eligibility Criteria

NDM is open to organizations of any type, subject to criteria outline below. Proposals will be screened to ensure that they conform to these requirements. Those that fail to meet the eligibility requirements will not be considered. Anyone with a good innovative idea to share -
non-government organizations (NGOs), foundations, private sector groups, universities and schools, local and municipal bodies, community-based organizations (CBOs), academic institutions, and co-operatives.

The applicants must have a performance record of at least two (2) years and registered with the Government of Nepal.

Proposals may be written in Nepali or English as long as the text will not exceed four (4) pages maximum. Proposals beyond 4 (four) pages, as prescribed by NDM, will be rejected. GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES FOR SAARC AWARD 2007

NOMINATIONS INVITED FOR SAARC AWARD 2007

The SAARC Secretariat invites nominations in English from individuals and organizations from the Member States for the SAARC Award 2007.

The aim of the Award is to honour individual citizens and organizations of South Asia for their exemplary work to promote peace, understanding, friendship and development in the region. The award is conferred at the SAARC Summits.

The prescribed Nomination Form for SAARC AWARD 2007 will be available from the SAARC Division of the Ministries of Foreign/External Affairs of Member States. It may also be downloaded from the SAARC Secretariat’s website www.saarc-sec.org under the link SAARC AWARD 2007.

I. Objectives

1. to encourage individuals and organizations based in South Asia to undertake programmes and activities complementing and supplementing the efforts of SAARC;

2. to honour outstanding contributions and achievements of individuals and organizations of the region in the fields of peace, development, social service, poverty alleviation, environment protection, cultural progress and in other agreed areas of regional cooperation; and

3. to recognize any other outstanding achievements, not covered above, of individuals and organizations in the region whose work or contribution has benefited or inspired the region.

II. The Award

The Award consists of a citation, a gold medal and cash prize of US$ 25,000 (United States Dollars Twenty Five Thousand).

III. Terms and Conditions

1. Nominations must be made on the prescribed Nomination Form available on the SAARC Website www.saarc-sec.org with the link SAARC Award 2007 and be supported by the required documents.

2. Nominations must be made in accordance with terms and conditions as contained in the website. Forwarding letters will not be necessary.

3. The last date for receipt of nomination at the SAARC Secretariat, Kathmandu, Nepal is 15 May 2008.

5. Supporting documents not in English must have an authenticated translation in English

6. The summaries of the nominated individuals and organizations’ accomplishments/ contribution for which the Award is recommended should be precise and factual not more than two pages.

7. Those eligible to make recommendation for nomination shall include individuals, and organizations working in the region.

8. Nominations / recommendations by/ of serving Heads of State/ Government may not be made so as to maintain the integrity of the selection process.

9. Nominations by e-mail, fax or any other electronic form will not be acceptable.

10. Self nominations will not be eligible.

11. Nominations from individuals or organizations where a nominee is a member, employee, employer, a close relative, patron or a founder may not be considered. These would be considered as self-nominations.

12. Posthumous nominations may not be considered.

13. Entries received after the deadline will not be considered.

14. Nominations found to contain false information will not be eligible for the Award.

15. Nominations received within the deadline will be scrutinized by a Selection Committee composed of Members nominated by the Member States of SAARC and their recommendation will then be submitted to the SAARC Council of Ministers for its endorsement.

16. The decision of the Council of Ministers on any aspect of the SAARC Award 2007 will be final and binding.

IV. References

Each recommendation for nomination must have three prominent personalities as referees who are familiar with the nominee’s achievements and contributions. The referees should provide their individual assessments and their contact addresses as they may be contacted by the SAARC Secretary General, if deemed necessary.

Santosh Shah receives the title of “Youth Ambassador for Peace”

The “Universal Peace Federation” and its affiliate organization the “Youth Federation for World Peace (YFWP)” acknowledged Santosh Shah, the publisher and editor of Today’s Youth Asia magazine as “Youth Ambassador for Peace” on 1st March, 2008 in Kathmandu.

The Youth Federation for World Peace (YFWP) is a global alliance of young leaders and youth-related organization dedicated to building world peace and harmony. Together with individuals, NGOs, businesses, government agencies and United Nations, YFWP works on critical issues to realize the dream of one global family of interdependence, mutual prosperity and universally shared values.

In light of this, Santosh was recognized for his contribution to youths and his works that aim to instill Nepalese youths with positive ideas and skills and provide capacity-building in order to promote youth’s active contribution to this nation in crisis. He also works as the South Asian Correspondent for SCOLA Television, headquarters based in Iowa (USA). Recently he was also appointed a Youth Leader at APLF (Asia-Pacific Leadership Forum) by UNAIDS to work towards raising awareness on HIV/AIDS in Nepal.

Receiving the title of Youth Ambassador of Peace as a huge responsibility, Santosh will continue his contributions towards the fulfillment of universal harmony and empowering the youths for the noble humanitarian cause.
